Li
Bai (699-762), a poet of the Tang Dynasty, was known for his forthright
personality, having many friends, fond of drinking and writing poetry. His
poetry style is bold and uninhibited. His life was full of
legends with a hint of tragedy. As a teenager, he studied diligently and read
extensively various books. In young adulthood, he traveled through magnificent
mountains and rivers, making friends with many refined scholars, high officials
and eminent personage. In middle age, he was appreciated by the emperor and was
summoned to the capital to be a member of the Imperial Academy. However,
because of his straightforward character and defying trivial conventions, he
had unpleasant incidents with some VIPs in the imperial court, which ultimately
caused him to be dismissed. In later years, he participated in a rebellion
that led to his exile as a political prisoner. After experiencing exile, he
passed away in illness.
In
758, Li Bai embarked on a journey of exile. In the spring of 759, when arriving
at the City of White Emperor, he suddenly received a decree from the emperor to
grant amnesty nationwide. Surprised and joyful, he immediately boarded a boat
to Jiangling. The journey to Jiangling was over a thousand miles, yet flowing
downstream in the Yangtze River, he arrived in Jiangling in no time. While in
exile, he felt the tedious, long road ahead. When pardoned, it seemed like the
whole world was rejuvenated; colorful clouds surrounded the White Emperor City. He was inspired to write the poem titled "Down
to Jiangling," also known as "Early Depart White Emperor City."
From
the perspective of writing techniques, this poem contrasts the "light boat" with "ten thousand mountains " to highlight the speed and ease of the boat passing through the Three Gorges and countless mountains, expressing the indescribable exhilaration.
From
an artistic perspective, this poem not only depicts magnificent natural scenery
but also expresses the poet's emotional changes. From a literary value
perspective, this poem is a classic work of Chinese literature with its
succinct verbiage, vivid depiction, and rich connotation.
